Freeman replicas can look similar in photographs while differing in comfort, upholstery shape and construction. Choose between Duvet and Tailor first, then inspect the details that determine how closely the finished sofa follows the reference.
This guide draws on our furniture inspections in Foshan and Minotti’s published specifications. The details described here apply to the replicas we inspected. A replica may use different materials and construction from the original, so confirm what the supplier will actually provide.
Quick answer
What should you check when buying a Freeman replica?
Compare the sitting feel of Duvet and Tailor. Check the gently rounded upholstery panels on the Duvet backrest, and on both the Tailor backrest and seat. For Duvet, also lift the separate seat cushions to inspect the support beneath them. Then examine the stitching, internal construction and metal base before agreeing on the final specification.

1. Choosing Duvet or Tailor
Freeman is a modular seating system designed by Rodolfo Dordoni. Duvet has separate, softly rounded seat cushions. Tailor has a more defined upholstered seat without separate loose seat cushions. Duvet and Tailor modules can be combined in the same sofa arrangement.

Tailor
Duvet
If you prefer a soft seat that lets you sink in slightly, focus on Duvet. If you like a firmer feel with more noticeable support, try Tailor. Combining both can suit family members with different preferences. Try the actual version being quoted, since replicas vary in their filling and construction.
2. Upholstery panels
Duvet has this repeated panel shape on the backrest. Tailor has it on both the backrest and seat. Duvet’s separate seat cushions should be assessed for their overall rounded shape, as described in the next section.
Gently rounded upholstery panels
Each upholstered panel should have a gentle, even curve, slightly raised rather than completely flat or overly puffed up. Viewed from the front, the panels should look evenly shaped. Viewed from the side, the curves should look smooth and natural. Very deep grooves or too much padding make the sofa look bulky.

Panel width
The panel width is 21 cm. Check that the panels are evenly spaced and that the sections at both ends match the reference for the module you are ordering.
Aligned backrest and seat seams on Tailor
On Tailor, the corresponding backrest and seat seams should line up when viewed from the front. Check the alignment across the whole module.

3. Duvet cushion construction
Rounded shape on both sides
A well-made Duvet cushion is slightly rounded on both sides. Each seat has a gently curved front edge, and adjacent cushions should have consistent fullness and proportions.

Recessed support beneath the cushions
In the better replicas, the foam beneath the cushions forms a shallow recess. The surrounding foam slopes down into this support area, while a raised section between adjacent cushions helps hold them in place. These contours support the rounded cushions and help keep them in position.
Some basic versions use a completely flat support surface. Lift the cushions to compare the structure rather than judging only the sofa’s finished appearance.

Seat height from front to back
From the side, the better Duvet seat cushions sit slightly higher at the front and lower toward the backrest. This gradual slope should be consistent across the seats and feel comfortable during a sitting test.

Keeping leather seat cushions in place
For leather seat cushions, check that non-slip material is fitted to help prevent sliding. Ask where it is placed and how it is secured. It should work together with the shaped support beneath the cushions to keep them in place.

4. Upholstery workmanship
Contrasting strips and finished seam edges
Between the panels, the inspected version used strips of microfibre synthetic leather in a contrasting colour, two rows of stitching, and overlock stitching on both seam edges to prevent fraying. Look for straight, evenly spaced stitch lines and a consistent strip width. To inspect these hidden seam edges, ask for a production photograph or a sample with the underside of the seam visible.

In the finer version shown on the left, the contrasting strip visible between the two rows of stitching is just 1 mm wide, with the stitching rows 6 mm apart. In the version on the right, the strip is 4 mm wide and the stitching rows are 12 mm apart. The wider strip and greater spacing make the panel divisions look heavier and more noticeable, while the narrower detail gives a cleaner, more refined finish.
Strip materials vary with the upholstery. Confirm the specified material and colour for the selected replica rather than assuming that every fabric or leather version uses the same detail.
Duvet corner seams
On the inspected Duvet corner, the parallel seams on the armrest and backrest do not meet the diagonal corner seam. Some basic replicas bring three lines together at one point. The diagonal seam is also made without the contrasting microfibre synthetic leather strip used at the panel joins. Check these seam locations separately.

Armrest and backrest connections
In the inspected Duvet version, the armrest and backrest are joined as one continuous corner unit; the diagonal line is a seam in the upholstery. Tailor should be checked for a separate armrest and backrest connection, including whether pin-type connectors are used. We have seen basic Tailor replicas made with a continuous connection.
The original Tailor uses connectors that allow the armrests and backrest to be removed from the base. Whether a replica can be taken apart depends on the supplier, so ask for a demonstration.

Smooth fabric where the armrest meets the backrest
An opening in the cover where the armrest meets the backrest helps the material sit flat. The surrounding fabric or leather should fit smoothly, without bunching or obvious wrinkles.

Straight stitching and smooth corners
Side stitching should be neat and evenly spaced. Long seams should run straight, parallel lines should keep consistent spacing, and stitches should turn smoothly around corners. Corners should have a clearly defined shape. The overall sofa lines should be straight and level across adjoining modules. The finished leather or fabric should lie smoothly without visible wrinkles.

5. Internal construction
How the rounded panels are formed
In the better versions we inspected, the foam is cut into gently rounded shapes using a computer-controlled machine, a process known as CNC cutting. This helps each panel rise smoothly and evenly. Other replicas use foam trimmed by hand, while some create the raised panel effect by stitching the upholstery and a layer of soft padding together, a process called quilting. Ask how the panels are made, then check the finished result: each panel should have a gentle, even curve, without looking completely flat or overly puffed up.

Seat filling
Tailor’s upholstered seat needs suitable high-density foam for support and to reduce the risk of sagging. Also check how well the foam springs back after pressure and how the foam layers are arranged. High density alone does not guarantee comfort or durability.
The original Duvet uses layered foam, memory foam and down in its seat cushions. The replica’s filling must be confirmed separately against the sample being quoted.
Edge padding
Very soft foam around the outer edges helps create the curved outline of the sides. Press the sides and corners to check even padding and how well it springs back. You should not readily feel the timber frame through a well-padded corner.

Support straps and springs
The better version we inspected used elastic support straps, known as webbing, stretched across the frame beneath the seat. Check their spacing, tension and attachment to the frame.
Some replicas add zigzag metal springs, also called sinuous springs, with the aim of extending the life of the seat support. Their performance depends on spring quality, installation and how they work with the foam. Springs can change the sitting feel, so compare the actual sample and record the type of seat support in the order.

6. The metal base
The better replicas we inspected used aluminium alloy bases. Basic versions more commonly used stainless steel with a plated finish, with corners welded together and ground smooth.
Inspect whether the metal frame sections are straight, their width and thickness, the corner joints, and the consistency of the colour and sheen. Confirm the material and how the corners are made in the quotation, since a photograph of the finish alone cannot establish the metal used.
For an aluminium alloy version, also check the surface finish and stability after assembly. Assess the workmanship together with the material.

7. Back support and headrests
Lower back cushion shape
In the better versions, the cushion supporting the lower back has a gently curved, teardrop shape when viewed from the side. Check whether it follows the lower back comfortably and works with the seat angle.

Non slip padding at the backrest
The version we inspected had anti-slip padding in the backrest area. Ask where this padding is placed and how it is attached on the version you are ordering. Ask the supplier to demonstrate how it prevents slipping during normal use.

Head support
In a normal seated position, the backrest generally does not reach the head. If you want head support, you will need an additional headrest. Minotti lists one as an option for Free man sofa.
For a replica, confirm that a compatible headrest is available, how it fits and whether it costs extra. Its position should suit the user’s height and sitting posture.

8. Before ordering
Size and sofa layout
Provide the overall dimensions, reference layout, which side the corner or chaise should be on, your choice of Duvet or Tailor modules, and your preferred fabric or leather. For a custom size, confirm the cushion count, panel layout, seat slope and base proportions on a drawing showing the dimensions. For original module dimensions and layout examples, see Minotti’s Freeman seating system. Confirm the dimensions of your selected replica configuration with the supplier before ordering.
Seat appearance after sitting
In the better replicas we inspected, the seat looked neat and even after the person stood up, without obvious dents or fabric gathering into folds. The cushions or raised panels kept their intended shape. For an online purchase, request a continuous sitting and standing video to assess this response.

Request the following evidence for the version being quoted:
Cover removal and cleaning
Ask separately about the seat cushion, back cushion and lower back cushion covers, as well as the armrest and backrest upholstery. Confirm which covers can be removed, how they are cleaned and how they are refitted. A removable cover is not necessarily washable.
Original specifications also vary by material; the leather covering the original Duvet armrests and backrest, for example, is not removable. If a replica is described as having fully removable covers, request the exact scope and a demonstration.
