Clients often send me a sofa or bed they love and ask the same questions: Can I change the color? Can the size be adjusted? Can the chaise or armrest move to the other side? And if the piece is made after I order, why can't the factory also change the seat depth and height?

These requests may all sound like customization, but they are not the same thing.

For popular replica furniture in Foshan, experienced suppliers normally already have a mature version of the product. The structure, proportions, patterns and production method have been tested through repeated orders. The piece is then produced after the client confirms the fabric, color and configuration.

In other words, it is made to order from an established model. It is not redesigned from a photograph for every new client.

QUICK ANSWER

Upholstery, color, left-or-right orientation and module combinations can often be changed safely. Overall length may sometimes be adjusted, but seat depth, seat height, backrest angle and core proportions should usually remain unchanged.

A note on terminology: in this article, replica furniture means a China-made, designer-style version. It is not an original branded product, and I do not add or provide the original brand's logo.

1. Made to Order Is Not the Same as Made from Scratch

Some buyers hear the words "standard model" and assume the factory has finished stock sitting in a warehouse. They think that changing the color or orientation requires dismantling an existing piece, so an extra customization charge must be normal.

That is not how many factory-direct sofas, beds and lounge chairs in Foshan are sold. They are commonly produced after the order is confirmed. What the factory already has is the mature product system:

• the established structure and proportions

• frame and upholstery patterns

• foam configuration

• sewing method

• module and connection details

The client chooses from the available materials, colors, dimensions and orientations, and the supplier produces the order accordingly. That is very different from asking a factory to infer the dimensions, materials and internal construction from a single reference image.

2. What Can Usually Be Changed?

These are general rules, not promises for every product. The final answer depends on the specific structure and on the sizes the supplier has already produced successfully.

3. Changes That Normally Do Not Affect Price or Lead Time

If the client keeps the same fabric and only selects a different color, the price and normal production time usually remain the same. The product is being made after the order, so the factory is not removing fabric from an already finished sofa.

Changing the left or right armrest, or reversing the chaise orientation, also normally does not add cost when that configuration is already supported by the model.

Color changes within the same material range are usually straightforward because the sofa is produced after the order is confirmed.

However, changing color is not the same as changing material. Price can change when a client:

• upgrades from a standard fabric to a higher-grade or imported fabric

• changes from fabric to genuine leather

• selects a different leather grade

• changes the wood species

• selects a different stone or special surface treatment

The real cost difference should come from the material or production method - not simply from attaching the word "custom" to the order.

Material selection is only one part of the difference. Internal frames, foam zoning, support systems and production consistency also affect the final quality. You can read my guide on how to compare replica furniture quality beyond appearance.

4. Why Length Can Sometimes Change, but Depth and Height Should Not

For a modular sofa, the safest way to change the overall size is often to select a different number or type of modules. This preserves the established proportions better than squeezing every module into a smaller width.

Some sofa models can also accept a modest length adjustment. But I still check whether the revised module widths will look balanced. If several modules are compressed only to reach a target total length, the seats may become too narrow, the curves may change and the finished sofa may no longer resemble the intended design.

Seat depth and seat height are different. They affect the frame, upholstery pattern, proportions and sitting comfort. Once those dimensions are changed, the supplier may need to redevelop the product rather than simply adjust a mature standard version.

MY PRACTICAL RULE

If the client needs a different seat depth or height, I would rather look for another mature model that already fits those requirements than force a successful sofa design into the wrong proportions.

5. Real Case: A 3.2 m Supermoon-Style Sofa

One client selected a Supermoon sofa and wanted three modules to fit within a total length of 3.2 meters.

The factory could reduce the length, but it could not proportionally reduce the seat depth or height. Compressing three modules into 3.2 meters would therefore make each section look close to a narrow square. The number would fit the room, but the proportions would move too far away from the intended design.

Option considered: three compressed modules within 3.2 m. The proportions become narrow and square.

Recommended solution: two modules within 3.2 m, preserving a composition closer to the mature design.

I recommended using two modules instead. The total length could still be approximately 3.2 meters, while each module retained a more balanced proportion. The client did not truly need three modules; she needed a sofa that fitted the available wall and still looked right.

This is why I do not accept every size request simply because a factory says, "We can make it." A product can be technically manufacturable and still be the wrong solution.

6. Dining Tables and Coffee Tables

For dining tables and coffee tables, I normally prefer the supplier's established dimensions. Clients can often choose from available wood, stone and surface-finish options, but a special size should be checked against the supplier's mature specifications before it is confirmed.

Material and finish options can create a very different result even when the established table dimensions are retained.

7. What Should Be Confirmed Before Ordering?

Whether the change involves color, orientation or size, it should be written clearly in the order or specification sheet. I normally confirm:

the final overall dimensions

the number and size of each module

left/right armrest or chaise orientation

fabric name, reference number and color

fabric or leather grade

wood, stone and other main materials

which parts remain the supplier's standard construction

which parts are being modified for the client

whether the modification affects price or lead time

the final inspection standard

A message saying "make it 3.2 meters" or "change it to green" is not enough. Dimensions, modules, orientation and materials should be confirmed together so the client, sourcing person and factory are all working from the same definition.

8.My Advice

When buying replica furniture, I prefer to start with a model that an experienced supplier has already produced many times. Fabric, color, orientation and module combinations can then be selected around the client's needs. Overall length should be reviewed carefully, while seat depth, seat height and core construction should normally remain unchanged.

Good sourcing is not about passing every request directly to a factory. It is about deciding which changes are safe, which changes will damage the proportions, which dimensions can be solved through module selection, and when another mature model would be a better fit.

Sometimes, refusing an unreasonable modification is the best way to protect the final result.

PLANNING A PURCHASE?

If you have selected a popular designer-style piece, send me the product name or reference image together with your required dimensions and material preferences. I will first check whether Foshan has a mature supplier and stable version, then explain what can be adjusted safely and what is better left unchanged.
