Two Minotti Coupé sofa replicas may look similar in photos but feel very different in person. The curved metal base, armrest shape, seat angle and internal filling all affect the finished sofa.

We have seen and sat on the original Coupé, as well as different replica versions. We have also checked the construction beneath the covers.

This guide combines Minotti’s official information with our own observations. The comparisons below refer to the replica samples we inspected. Before ordering, check that the quoted version matches the sample you have seen.

Quick Answer What Should You Check First

Start with the curved metal base, armrest shape and recessed lines across the seat. Then check how gently you sink into the seat, how your lower back is supported, and whether the armrests feel well padded.

Finally, look at the internal frame, filling and removable covers.

If you are buying online, ask for side views, underside photos, construction photos and videos showing someone sitting on the sofa and removing its covers.

1. About the Original Coupé

According to Minotti’s official Coupé page, Giampiero Tagliaferri designed the sofa for the 2025 Collection.

Its rounded shapes, sloping seat and long horizontal headrest and lower-back cushion give it a clear 1960s and 1970s influence.

On the leather version, matching stitching runs from the headrest, past the backrest buttons and across the seat. Curved aluminium trim sits along the front and back of the upholstered base.

These details need to work together. Small changes to the armrests, seat angle or metal curves can change the overall appearance.

2. The Overall Shape

The curved metal base

The higher-quality sample we inspected uses an aluminium-alloy base trim made with custom tooling. The factory developed it by taking apart an original sofa, studying its shape and creating a digital model.

The result is a smooth, curve that fits closely against the upholstery.

Some basic samples use bent stainless steel. We noticed uneven curves, small bumps and gaps between the metal and the upholstery.

Ask for close-up photos from the side and at an angle. Follow the reflection along the metal to look for dents or wavy areas. Check whether the curves remain smooth around the ends and fit evenly against the sofa.

The recessed seat lines

The better sample uses a zip-based system beneath the cover to pull the upholstery down evenly along the recessed seat lines.

Some basic samples did not use the same system, and the lines were less even.

Check that each line has a consistent depth and follows a smooth path. The padded areas on either side should look balanced.

A cover-removal video can show how the lines are formed underneath. Close-up photos will show how neatly they are finished.

3. The Hardware Underneath

Centre support feet

The better sample uses black centre support feet. They provide support while staying less visible beneath the sofa.

Some basic versions have exposed stainless-steel feet that catch the light and draw attention to the underside.

Look at the sofa from normal sitting height as well as from below. Check how visible the feet are and whether they are securely fitted.

4. The Internal Frame

Wood frame

The better replica we inspected has a wooden headrest frame with a triangular profile, leaving more room for foam padding.

Some replicas use a rectangular frame instead. This takes up more space inside the headrest, leaving less room for foam. When you lean your head back, you may feel the hard frame through the padding.

Ask for photos of the headrest frame before it is covered. If you can test the sofa in person, rest your head against it and check for hard spots.

Seat support

Minotti states that the original Coupé uses high-resilience foam in different densities, with steel pocket springs in the seat core.

The better replica sample we inspected has a box-shaped wooden seat frame containing individually pocketed springs. Different foam layers and zones sit above this support.

Some basic samples use other spring systems with webbing straps and a simpler foam arrangement. The difference becomes clearer when comparing the internal photos and sitting on the finished sofas.

Ask for a written specification for the quoted version. “High-density foam” or “premium springs” does not explain how the seat is built.

For more examples of how frames, foam and workmanship can differ, read our guide to comparing replica furniture quality.

5. Sitting Comfort

The seat angle

Coupé’s seat slopes down from the front towards the back. This helps your body settle into the sofa and meet the lower-back support.

Some replicas do not reproduce this angle closely. Even when the overall length and depth are similar, the sitting position can feel different.

Check the side profile and, if possible, sit on the sample. Overall measurements alone will not tell you whether the seat angle feels right.

Softness and support

When we sat on the original Coupé, our bodies sank gently into the seat while still feeling supported. As we leaned back, the seat, lower-back cushion and backrest followed the body’s curves and felt soft against it.

The better replica we tested came closer to this feeling. Different areas used different levels of firmness, with firmer foam at the corners to help hold the shape.

Some basic versions felt mainly bouncy, with less softness around the body. On certain samples, we could also feel the wooden frame when leaning against the armrest.

When testing a sample:

  • Sit normally and notice how the seat supports you.

  • Lean back and check whether your lower back feels supported.

  • Lean sideways against the armrest and check for hard spots.

This gives you a better idea of comfort than pressing the seat with one hand.

Cushion filling

Back cushions also affect the sitting experience. In some basic samples, we could feel hard feather pieces mixed with fibre balls. Some had a noticeable smell. Please check the quality of the cushion’s filling; the high-quality version is made of 100% white goose down.

6. What Is Under the Covers

The inner cover around the foam

The better sample has a removable inner cover with a fibre-padding layer that fully wraps around the foam.

Some basic samples have loose fibre padding placed directly over the foam instead.

Ask to see the sofa with its outer cover removed. Check whether the foam is fully wrapped, whether the padding is evenly spread, and whether the edges and seams are tidy.

These details are usually hidden in normal product photos.

Removable covers and backrest sections

The better sample we checked has fully removable outer covers. Both the upper and lower backrest sections can also be detached by undoing their fasteners.

This can make moving and maintenance easier. Some basic samples do not offer the same level of cover removal or structural disassembly.

Before ordering, confirm these points separately:

Removable covers are not automatically machine-washable. Follow the cleaning instructions for the exact material you choose.

For homes with narrow doorways, stairs or lifts, ask for the dimensions of the largest packed part before ordering.

7. Choosing the Size

See the official Coupé technical sheet for the full range of modules and dimensions.

For a replica, confirm the supplier’s actual sizes and available combinations.

If you want to change the length, ask how this will affect the seat divisions, stitching positions and armrest proportions. Changing only the overall measurement may not preserve the original balance.

Before changing the size, read our guide to what can and cannot be customized. It explains how size changes can affect a sofa’s shape and comfort.

8. What to Confirm Before Ordering

Compare quotes using the same size and a clear material specification.

Before paying a deposit, confirm:

Whether the photographed sample matches the quoted version.

The metal base material, colour and finish.

The wood frame, springs, foam and cushion filling.

The exact fabric or leather selection.

Which covers and structural parts can be removed.

The finished dimensions and largest package size.

The production time and inspection arrangements.

Without these details, it is difficult to understand a price difference. A lower quote may include a different frame, filling, finish or removal system.

Low-quality version

The armrest shape and lower-back curve

Coupé’s armrest has a full, softly rounded oval shape. Some replicas make it too flat, especially at the front end, losing the gentle curves of the original.

The lower-back cushion also has a soft curve towards the seat. This shape should flow smoothly into the padded sides beneath the armrests. If these areas are too flat or too straight, the sofa loses its soft, rounded look.

Compare photos taken from similar angles. Check the fullness of the armrest ends, the curve of the lower-back cushion, and how these shapes meet around the inner corners.
